Synopsis

You’ve probably heard of me.
Reclusive fantasy author turned famous when his series got developed into a mega TV hit.
Except now I’m way behind deadline, and the whole world is waiting to see what I’ll write next.
The pressure is getting to me, and I. Can’t. Write.
Cue: small town where people don’t recognize me.
Cue: my assistant insisting on a personal chef to keep me fed and nothing more.
Cue: finding the first bit of inspiration I’ve felt in months whenever she’s around…
Am I a walking cliche now, or what?
Dani Cooper seems to have her own hurdles to jump this holiday season. Newly divorced, looking for her next move. She’s the first person who’s seen me for me in way too long. And I see her, too–as way more than just an employee, a divorcee, a cook. She’s becoming my muse…
But when my Christmas deadline hits, will it spell the end of us, too?

My hand went straight to my mouth, and I gasped.

My dad craned his neck to see me from his recliner. “You okay?”

“Fine, Dad.” I counted to thirty in my head before rising from my chair and casually taking my book up to my bedroom where I could be alone. I flopped onto the bed and turned to page 243 of book one of The Bastyan Saga.

Markys returned to his chambers, still full from the twelve-course meal the queen had planned. She’d wanted desperately to impress the lords and ladies who had traveled far and wide for the king’s tournament, and she had succeeded. Behind his solid oak door, Markys discovered Lady Tatyana of Olen sprawled naked on his bed, wearing only a diamond and sapphire necklace.

“Markys.” She curled her index finger, beckoning him over.

The young man shut the door behind him and stepped toward the bed. The moon shining through the window spotlighted the lady’s bosom. Markys had never seen breasts in the flesh before, at least not ones unattached to a suckling babe.

I swallowed and turned the page.

“Greetings, Markys,” came another voice, from the shadows.

Markys startled and peered toward the dark corner. Danyl, the king’s scribe, was perched on a footstool, arms crossed.

“Danyl wants to join us tonight, Markys. I told him you would not mind.” Lady Tatyana reached for Markys’s breeches—

“Dani?”

A knock sounded on my bedroom door.

Clearing my throat, I marked the page with a dog ear and quickly hid the book under my pillow. I set my reading glasses on the bedside table. “Una? Come on in.” My voice came out all shaky and odd. I wasn’t fooling anyone. Una would know for sure that I’d been reading an erotic scene about a young man’s first sexual encounter with his mother’s rival and his father’s best friend. It had to be written all over my face.

Holy crap, where had Matt come up with this stuff? Personal experience?
